Heritage Builder

Renuntio Ltd is Adrian's creation 'to announce' his unique spectrum of skills across the heritage built environment.
Picture
Adrian Gill BSc involves his son Harrison in the business who is an Apprentice Building Surveyor studying at Nottingham Trent University (NTU).

Heritage Builder and a Building Surveyor

Adrian's 30 years in construction include Master Builder Craftsmanship, management at Wimpey in Europe and Vice President and Board of Director at Latium in the USA. It is unique to have a diverse skill set, the same individual with traditional practical building qualifications, senior management expertise and a triple accredited (RICS, CIOB AND CABE) professional building surveying degree.

There are few who can acclaim such diversity across the built environment. Having said that Adrian's clients benefit from Adrian's spectrum of skills.
Professional surveying or implement the build in practice. Property owners regularly choose Adrian for his knowledge and/or recommendations for solving problems with their property. There is added peace of mind, a comprehensive service, advice received may differ from that advised by a general builder. It is vital to receive the correct advice from the offset especially if home owners are keen to avoid creating the ideal conditions for damp to thrive. A building surveyor advice will save money and advise on the the correct materials are used for job for the traditional property.

Practicing as a MasterCraftsman bricklayer and Stone Mason has given Adrian an 'edge' his thorough comprehensive understanding of bricks, stone and mortar and their interaction within the wet climatic environment of the UK means he understand different mortar mixes and the effect on minimising damp in traditional properties. Unfortunately since the introduction of gypsum and cement products many traditional properties have experienced spalling bricks deteriorating beyond repair.

Knowledge is Power and experience in building practice evidently questions the sheer pointlessness of chemical injection where traditional properties are concerned.

About the Builder who became a Building Surveyor
There are few who can acclaim such diversity across the built environment. Having said that feedback from clients has confirmed the client benefits from Adrian's spectrum of skills.

Property owners regularly choose Adrian for his knowledge and/or recommendations for solving problems with their property. Advice received may differ from what a builder would advise. It is vital to receive the correct advice from the offset especially if home owners are keen to avoid creating the ideal conditions for damp to thrive. A building surveyor advice will save money and advise on the the correct materials are used for job for the traditional property.

The following is more personal many client inform us that knowing about Adrian helps provide them with peace of mind.
Adrian's building qualifications began as a bricklayer in the 80's and funded by the Royal Navy as part of his deployment, he had been a marine engineer and diver assigned to specialist missions.

After qualifying as a bricklayer he advanced beyond to become a Master craftsman and Stone Mason spending many years under the supervision from Walter Pollard a traditional Builder in the South West from where Adrian originates. Walter taught Adrian the old fashion techniques and the benefits of using lime mortar. Adrian has numerous building industry Advanced Craft CSCS qualifications/accreditations and site certificates to include bricklaying, lime plastering and timber framing.

Adrian offers clients a Building Surveying Service, buildings of all archetypes where heritage is a specialist area that he undertakes. He regularly completes damp and timber defect surveys on heritage, traditional solid walled properties where damp is a regular problem. Obvious signs of damp include deteriorating bricks (spalling) surrounded with cement mortar (sacrificial brick).
Damp becomes highly problematic and the bricks continue to deteriorate unless remedial action is implemented.
Often buildings when cement has been used to repair or repoint the mortar on the exterior and modern (gypsum) plaster on the interior creating damp.
Modern methods cause significant damage to the brickwork or stone structure and prevents the mortar from doing the job the building was designed to do which allows moisture to escape. The result is a damp house with visible signs of damaged brick and often modern mortar. The remedy is to arrange a building survey to determine the remedial action.

Pre purchase heritage house inspections are necessary to survey, auction properties where buyers need to make the right decision of the short, medium and long term changes likely to be permitted to heritage properties and the indicative costs to the capital investment.

Living the Heritage Life

Picture
Adrian served in the Royal Navy who funded Adrian in the 80's to attend college and train to become a bricklayer. Adrian thereafter set up in business and sought to locate a Master craftsman to employ, where he could learn beyond a general builder and specialise as a master craftsman in traditional solid wall, stone and masonry craft skills (He has mastered other traditional skills to include timber framing and lime plastering).

By chance an acquaintance recommended an available master craftsman. A date was arranged for the two men to meet. At the day of the meeting Adrian discovered the master craftman was in fact the same man that Adrian regularly watched as a child some 15 years prior to the meeting.

Adrian's vivid childhood memories of Walter Pollard the Master Mason and special constable who lived opposite the local primary school in Kingswear, South Devon. Adrian whilst at primary school as a young child would regularly see Walter returning home from work with his masonry tools and level. The young Adrian was aware that Walter Pollard was a builder of numerous luxury houses in Kingswear, reputed to be one of the most difficult places to build with its very steep hill on the estuary of the river Dart.

Adrian and Walter Pollard had a unique arrangement Adrian was the Apprentice who employed the Master Mason they both worked together on heritage homes including the home of Sir Arthur Harold Clayton (Torpedo Boat Captain) of Rock House, Kingswear (Peerage, 2019) and Admiral Sir Frank Hopkins 5th Sea Lord and controller of the Navy, (Roberson, 2018; Oxford DNB 1991) who had also written Adrian a personal reference to join the Royal Navy as an Engineer. Admiral Frank Hopkins was well acquainted with Adrian and his parents and always took time to have a good long chat with Adrian's father. Other homes included celebrities of the late Keith Floyd on Fish (Caterer, 2009).

Adrian and Walter’s projects Included lime plastering, stone, brick and cob building projects with lime mortar and lime renders internal /external. Most work was restoration of traditional and heritage buildings. Adrian became an advanced craftsman and stone mason mastering the traditional building methods and craft from Walter to gain a full understanding of using heritage construction and using lime,  a breathable mortar. Lime mortar is important for use in traditional buildings of different archetypes and the effect on damp issues, condensation and timber rot.

Walter Pollard retired, Adrian decided to accept an offer to advance into management and began working for Wimpey Construction in Europe and later on progressive opportunities with the Latium Group projects included operating out of New York, USA.

Adrian Gill is a qualified Building Surveyor and is respected amongst Local Authorities who have appointed him to advise them on large scale heritage projects. He now lives in a Grade 2 Listed Building in the Midlands UK, he is married with five sons,  the eldest has severe autism, the next son is an Apprentice Building Surveyor in his 2nd year of study, his third son is entering Architectural College and his youngest sons are preschool age twins and will soon be entering the local primary school.
